Learn To Curl Clinics Nov 8, 9, 10 Curling Registration Thur Nov 9 and Fri Nov 10,
I hope this ‘update’ finds you healthy and that
this memo answers some of your looming questions about the start of our upcoming season.
Well, we’ve had all the luck of a 2 leaf shamrock. The chiller has indeed arrived; the old one is out and the new one is in place.
We initially had hoped to have the plant up and running, and to be making ice by now, however that appears not to be the case.
We’ve been keeping an eye on the header manifolds that are under the walkway in the ice area adjacent to the lobby, for a few years now. They are the part that distributes the brine liquid through the pipes in the floor that causes the floor to freeze and make ice.
While these parts do wear out due to corrosion, they typically last for many, many years. I’m not sure if they are original equipment but if they are, they’ve served us well.
The corrosion on the outside of one of the metal header pipes has gotten considerably worse and actually has sprung a small leak.
The decision on when and how to repair or replace this component is an RDKB decision in consultation with their contract maintenance company. While expected to occur at some time in the future, based on regular annual inspections, now was not anticipated, especially on top of all of the other expenses involved right now. The old brine is caustic and needs to be disposed of properly before this repair can be done and a new brine installed.
As well, (yes there’s more), the ‘pit’ that the pipes sit in, has years of paint sludge that has accumulated. This occurs when the floor paint and water are squeegee’d into the pit at the end of the season, and it is supposed to drain away into a field underneath our parking lot. Remembering that last season, we had two years of paint and water go down there in a short time frame last fall.
The paint sludge is a considerable amount of muck and the concern right now is that the pit is not draining properly anymore.
A Hydrovac truck is the best option but our rear rollup doors are too small for the height of a large truck. Other options are being considered (septic tank pump truck, concrete line pump, etc) and the hope is that one mechanism can remove and dispose of both the paint and the brine for us.
And, of course, this all costs money and takes time. The RDKB is looking at all available options to complete this entire repair in a timely fashion properly.
Our now adjusted start date, Learn to Curl Clinics and Registration Night have been further postponed due to this unfortunate issue.
We are striving to curl as soon as possible, but we won’t advertise an actual date until we have a cold floor.
Thank you,
Doug Bain,
Club President
